The Shins have premiered new track ‘So Now What‘, their first material since fourth album Port of Morrow was released in 2012.
The song will be featured on the upcoming film Wish I Was Here, directed by Zach Braff. The band previously worked with Braff on 2004 film Garden State – they contributed two songs to this soundtrack.
‘So Now What’ was written by frontman James Mercer at the director’s request – Braff told NPR: “It’s no secret I am a giant fan of The Shins. For this film, I asked James Mercer if he would consider writing something original, inspired by his first impression of seeing the film. Not only did he say yes, but what he came back with gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. He is a savant.”
The film’s OST also includes songs from Bon Iver and Badly Drawn Boy, as well as a duet from Cat Power and Coldplay.
Wish I Was Here will be released in UK cinemas on September 18. The soundtrack is available to download from July 15 – its tracklisting is:
