‘Bonanzoid Deathgrip’ – Biffy Clyro

Biffy Clyro are known for their fantastic B-sides, with some of these usually ‘lesser songs‘ even often surpassing their album releases. Although they have released a B-side album, Lonely Revolutions, it is a B-side from their third album Infinity Land that is on this list. Taken from the lead single, ‘Glitter and Trauma’, ‘Bonanzoid Deathgrip’ is a classic Biffy song in a nutshell, with its awkward, dissonant guitar work and interesting lyrics, this time about vampires; beautifully sung and increasingly barked out by lead singer and guitarist Simon Neil. This is one of the rare times that Neil actually employs screaming this harshly and the bands instrumental work progresses into Biffy’s distinctive, some would say atonal, style as the song moves on. This is very reminiscent of the band’s sound at the time and the rest of Infinity Land and also its predecessor, Vertigo of Bliss adopt this style. Sadly the band have distanced themselves slightly from this approach with their subsequent albums although last year’s double album, Opposites, was something of a triumphant return to form for the trio.
