Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda has criticised the pop music of the day by declaring bands like Haim, Vampire Weekend and Chvrches “Disney commercial music”.
Talking to Noisey Shinoda stated that “there’s so much music out there; there’s so much stuff that sounds like Haim or CHVRCHES or Vampire Weekend that I’m full. The thing I’m hungry for is not that”.
The Chvrches’ singer Lauren Mayberry said that these comments are “complete bullshit” during an interview with Swiss TV channel Joiz and continued by saying “it’s not an opinion I would worry about hugely, it’s not my kind of music. They’ve been on the radio for how long, and I just don’t listen to that radio station. That’s a smarter move than saying something for a tagline…I think that’s silly. Live and let live. I will continue to probably not buy Linkin Park albums.”
The 00’s nu-metallers have returned to the scene recently with a headline appearance at Download Festival and new album The Hunting Party released June 16th.
Here is an example of what Shinoda refers to as ‘Disney music’:
