Indie Acts To Watch 2015 – The Lone Bellow

Brooklyn-based indie-folk band The Lone Bellow are set to release their second album Then Came The Morning in January 2015.

So it’s nearly time for us all to celebrate another year ending. Hopefully 2014 has brought you a few new favourite bands that you’ll be following for the next few years, but if it hasn’t do not worry. 2015’s breed of indie is just as promising (if not more so). Throughout the new year we will be bringing you HTF Indie’s top tips for acts who have the potential to steal your musical hearts away.

The Lone Bellow are a Brooklyn-based three-piece indie-folk band composed of Zach Williams on guitar and lead vocals, Kanene Donehey Pipkin on mandolin and backing vocals and Brian Elmquist on guitar and backing vocals. Formed in 2012, they all came from their own separate musical backgrounds, with Elmquist working as a solo artist and Pipkin hosting open mic nights in China with her husband. Williams began writing a journal when his wife was hospitalised following a horse riding accident – upon her full recovery, his written words marked the start of his song-writing career, and indeed the start of the band-to-be’s career as well.

The trio came together after Pipkin and Williams played together at a wedding and realised their potential – they began working together on Williams’ solo song writing ventures, and released their self-titled debut album in 2013. They are set to release their second album Then Came The Morning early next year, produced by The National guitarist Aaron Dessner.

Fittingly enough, The Lone Bellow are a band for those who like their indie-folk classic and simple, vocally drawing similarities with Kings of Leon, and instrumentally with The National themselves. With similar contemporaries including Hozier and Rayland Baxter, they’re a band that take advantage of slow riffs, harmonising and deep-seated country sounds of the Deep South. Then Came The Morning, the first single of their same-named forthcoming album, sees them adopting the epic nature of their ancestors, and will most likely see them enjoying the spotlight on the likes of BBC Radio 6.

The band’s second album Then Came The Morning is due to be released on January 27 2015, via Descendant Records.
