Cat Power is set to play a free benefit concert tonight (Sunday 24th August) for the protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. Protests began following the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown by police. The show will take place at the Firebird in St. Louis.

Power announced the news in an Instagram post of a t-shirt displaying “Support #Ferguson Support Peace” – she wrote that: “all proceeds will go to help protesters get out of jail & any needed supplies & food for protesters & flowers for rifles.” The singer has been pledging her support through social media since protests began two weeks ago. Other musicians who have shown support include Billy Bragg, Killer Mike and Talib Kweli.

The singer-songwriter invited Sky Ferreira to perform, however she is unavailable. Ferreira wrote in an Instagram post: “I’m trying to find a way to come but I’m contractually obligated to another show. ”The $$$ for my performance will go towards this & I will be there in spirit.”

Michael Brown, aged 18, was shot on August 9. His death sparked protests against police brutality and racial profiling.
