Death Grips, the experimental hip-hop group from Sacramento, CA, surprised everyone this week and dropped part one of a two-disc LP titled ‘The Powers That B‘.
The first part of the double album, ‘Niggas On The Moon‘, was released on Sunday and it heavily features Icelandic singer Bjork, sampling her vocals on all eight tracks. Released for free via ThirdWorlds.net, the first part incorporates styles and themes that are familiar to Death Grips listeners, with chopped, erratic samples strewn throughout.
For those who have followed previous Death Grips releases, you’ll notice that this is yet another instance the group has taken on a Bjork production, with remixes of ‘Sacrifice‘ and ‘Thunderbolt‘ coming as part of the Biophilia remix series.
Clearly Bjork was as excited as we were when she found out she was included in the release, as per a statement she left on her Facebook page:
“i am proud to announce my vocals landed on the new death grips album ! i adore death grips and i am thrilled to be their “found object” ! i have been lucky enough to hang and exchange music loves w/ them and witness them grow !! epic : onwards !!”
Death Grips’ no holds barred approach to their productions and delivery is certainly refreshing, and it only creates more buzz and excitement as we wait for part two, ‘Jenny Death’, to drop later this year.
