Welcome to the world of fantasy albums where music fans are put to the test to decipher their ultimate collection. Comedian, Mark Watson reveals his fantasy album.

The rules are simple(ish): they can’t repeat an artist, and to just make it that little bit more interesting they have to use the same track number from another album. For example, Track 1 could be the opening track of the incredible Stone Roses’ debut ‘I Wanna Be Adored’. Track 2 could be Blur’s ‘Song 2′ – you get the idea.

This month’s fantasy album has been curated by comedian and novelist Mark Watson.

Fantasy Album

Mark Watson is one of the UK’s finest comedians, he has toured the world with this comedy and has been a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe over the past 15 years including the occasional 24-hour shows. Watson has recently appeared on Taskmaster and Celebrity Island and is a regular on BBC Radio Five Live’s Fighting Talk. This year Steven Spielberg’s production company Amblin picked up the rights to his graphic novel ‘Dan and Sam’ co-written with Oliver Harud and has written six novels.

Here’s is Mark Watson’s Fantasy album: ‘Mark of Quality’.

TRACK ONE: ‘TANGLED UP IN BLUE’ – BOB DYLAN

” I sometimes find I can take Dylan or leave him, frightening as it is to admit that. But this is approaching perfection: I don’t think you’d ever get tired of it.”

TRACK TWO: ‘FROM BLOWN SPEAKERS’ – THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

“I never stop trying to convert people to this band. This is a joyous song which has never failed to elevate my mood, and I’m quite a gloomy bastard.”

TRACK THREE: ‘WE ARE ALL ALONE’ – RITA COOLIDGE

“This bittersweet, kitschy offering is one of my guilty pleasures. There are ‘track 3’s I like more, but I’ve got to think about the balance of the whole album. I’ve taken this quite seriously. “

TRACK FOUR: ‘IN THE NEW YEAR’ – THE WALKMEN

I never name an all-time favourite song, but in the unlikely event someone forced me to at gunpoint, it’s this.”

TRACK FIVE: ‘MUSIC TO WALK HOME BY’- TAME IMPALA

“My favourite band of recent years: I could have put one of their songs in any of the ten positions. This is five minutes of absolute, heart-pounding brilliance.”

TRACK SIX: ‘WUTHERING HEIGHTS’ – KATE BUSH

“You end up hearing this a lot in your life, but the unearthly shriek of the vocal never stops sending chills down the spine. Unless you hate it, which some people do. Maybe even then, but the wrong type of chills.”

TRACK SEVEN: ‘WAKE UP’ – ARCADE FIRE

“Not my absolute favourite song by this very special band, but the best fit for the album. The transition between tracks 6 and 7 is going to be so sweet, I’m starting to wish this album actually existed.”

TRACK EIGHT: ‘GO’ – PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING

“I’ve included this to change the tone once more. It works best as part of its original album (which charts various highlights of the space race in mesmerising style) but it’s still pretty great as a standalone. “

TRACK NINE: ‘NEW YORK CITY COPS’ – THE STROKES

“At this point, in the twilight of the record, you want a final ‘banger’, as the kids say. Not many songs bang as hard as this and Casablancas’ just-woken-up voice fits it so perfectly.”

TRACK TEN: ‘THE TOURIST’ – RADIOHEAD

“If people still don’t like Radiohead at this point, there’s not much point in arguing with them. But I’ll never forget listening to OK Computer for the first time, the gorgeousness of the album’s final notes. And now they are mine. “
