Sherlock star, Martin Freeman, has confirmed that the next instalment of the BBC smash will be in the form of a Christmas special next year.
The Beeb have been unusually hush hush about the next series of one of their biggest shows ever, refusing to be drawn on the dates for the next episodes of Sherlock, but Freeman has broken the silence.
In a recent interview he was asked about a Christmas special that has been pencilled in for 2015. “It looks pretty likely. I’m speaking off-message here – if this was New Labour I’d get fired – [but] a Christmas special is what I understand”.
The BBC’s reserve is understandable in a way because both Freeman and Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbactch, have become huge Hollywood stars off of the back of the show. It must have been very difficult to tie them both down at the same time given their hectic schedules.
Freeman also confirmed that his real-life partner, Amanda Abbington will also be returning to the show to play his fictional spouse, Mrs Watson, within the show. He explained that she would be back “for the foreseeable future”.
With season 3 being left on a cliffhanger, we cannot wait to see what creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have in store for the boys next year.
