Last night fans of the long-running soap opera Eastenders had a surprise when veteran character Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) made a return to the show. Albert Square’s much-loved pub landlady appeared in two scenes of last night’s episode as she attempts to put a stop to the wedding between her son Phil Mitchell and Sharon Watts.

We first see Peggy in a Portuguese villa, her reaction to the wedding invitation is not one of joy as she rages “That tashy little tart isn’t going near my boy!” She then tries to persuade her niece Ronnie, who is also in Portugal, to return to Walford and try to stop the wedding going ahead.

This will be the second time Barbara Windsor has returned to her matriarchal character after officially quitting in 2010, she also reappeared last year to support Phil through his time of depression.

Windsor says of her return: “Peggy just couldn’t resist putting her oar in when it comes to Sharon, who she has never forgiven for breaking up her precious boys Phil and Grant!

She added: “I hope it was a nice surprise for the EastEnders fans.
