Ben McKenzie was taken to hospital on Friday due to a head injury he sustained whilst filming the new pre-Batman series Gotham. The actor uploaded a number of pictures onto his Instagram revealing a deep gash on the side of his head and spent most of his 36th birthday receiving stitches.

The caption linked to one of the pictures reads: “Holy concrete wall, Batman! #gotham”, referencing a quote from the early Batman series in the 60s. Another picture reveals McKenzie giving a thumbs up as he receives stitches. He thanked his doctor in the caption, which said: “Doc Sherman at New York-Presbyterian, you are a career saver. Thanks for stitching me up nice.

The actor is recovering and will be ready to return to the Gotham set on Monday, playing the character of Detective James Gordon. The series follows Detective Gordon, a new recruit to the Gotham City Police Department, as he fights crime and solves cases in a pre-Batman City.

Gotham is due to be aired in the US on 22 September on FOX and some time later on UK television.
