Channel 5 plan to create a new image for the channel by producing more upmarket shows such as Gotham and shunning the reality show Big Brother to one side. This new plan comes as a result of American media group Viacom buying the channel for £450 million in May.
The new plan aims to create a clearer identity for Channel 5, which is currently seen as a mere competitor to Channel 4. In this plan, Big Brother’s domination over Channel 5 will lessen and they will focus on producing different material. New American crime drama Gotham is the channel’s most successful show of this year, raking in 3.8 million viewers.
In the past year we’ve seen Big Brother retreat from the limelight to make room for bigger and better shows, and has been moved from its 9pm slot to the later 10pm slot. It is rumoured that Channel 5 may be willing to move it even later, to 11pm, and have hope that faithful followers of the reality show will still watch.
Channel 5 aims to become a prolific historical channel, and have already started creating many shows to put the plan in motion. Shows planned so far are Britian’s Bloodiest Dynasty: The Plantagenets along with Rome : The First Superpower and a social experiment show called 10,000BC in which contestants will be put in stone age conditions.
