Some could have never predicted it, some defied their pure existence but no-one can deny the seemingly popular choice for production studios lately is – the prequel.
We’ve seen what happened before John Carpenter‘s ‘The Thing’ in 2011, we got taken back to the start with Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ and now Warner Brothers could well be taking us back to The Overlook Hotel before Jack Torrance and his family turned up. If the mere mention of this sickens you to the core I suggest you turn away now…
Because not only have the LA times reported the studio “quietly exploring the possibility of a prequel” to the 1980 cult classic but writer-producer Laeta Kalogridis has also been recruited.
Kalogridis has previously worked on ‘Shutter Island’ and ‘Avatar’ and has a lot of ideas she could potentially unravel, like the story of the previous caretaker Grady, who axed his two twin daughters to death before killing himself, or perhaps the chilling mystery behind room 237, the masked guests that haunt the hotel or she could even go way back before the hotel was built upon its Indian burial grounds.
However, Warner Bros have apparently stressed the project is still at very early stages of discussion and not officially in development so who knows what could happen.
Stephen King, meanwhile, is writing up a sequel to his novel that stemmed all of this madness which catches up with Danny Torrance (the son of Jack Torrance) in later life titled ‘Dr Sleep’. He has not been linked to any work in this rumored prequel.
