With Sylvester Stallone pretty much milking every last penny out of most franchises that he has starred in, the news has broken today that Rambo V may finally come to fruition.
Although many rumoured story-lines have been mooted in the past, German production company, Splendid Pictures have released a statement confirming that they have picked up the rights to Rambo V whilst also highlighting the plot details.
In a translated announcment, they have said: “With Rambo V, Sylvester Stallone returns in his iconic role. This time he goes up against a Mexican cartel. Stallone, who has also written the screenplay, describes the new Rambo as his version of No Country For Old Men. Like the last film, Rambo V is produced by Avi Lerner (The Expendables 1-3).”
It is interesting that they compare the film to the Coen Brothers masterpiece, No Country For Old Men. Whether or not Rambo V will be classed in the same bracket is yet to be seen, but producer Avi Lerner is something of an action aficionado and so it could be more than just a run-of-the-mill action sequel.
Rambo IV was released in 2008, 20 years after Rambo III and managed to double its budget at the box office. Presumably therefore a fifth film will do the same sort of business.
