Warner Bros. is keenly pressing to get underway in developing an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, and with Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) already at the helm to direct, their next desire would be to cast the recent Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey in the lead antagonist role of Randall Flagg.
King’s story follows a group of survivors of a post-apocalyptic plague of humanity’s own creation, with Randall Flagg as a demonic entity trying to corrupt and destroy what’s left. The novel published in 1978, was adapted into a TV miniseries in 1994, with Jamey Sheridan playing the part intended for McConaughey.
No formal discussion have yet taken place between Warner and McConaughey’s agents, but reportedly they are keen for him to be in the project. Although they may have a fight on their hands, as Stephen Gagham, director of Syriana is interested in McConaughey for a role in his film Gold.
Matthew McConaughey is currently working on Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Tees and will be appearing in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, released on 7 November 2014.
