Christian Bale is currently in talks to play the lead role in 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of The Deep Blue Good-By.
The author of the novel, John D. McDonald, was a prolific writer of thrillers and had a frequent favourite protagonist, a character called Travis McGee. Bale is negotiating a deal to play McGee and with The Deep Blue Good-By being the first in a 21 book series, there could be scope of a future franchise as well.
James Mangold is lining up to direct and Dennis Lehane who wrote Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone and Shutter Island has also been touching up the script. These are all big names in Hollywood and so this could be something really special. It has certainly helped the project along a little bit that’s for sure, with the screenplay lingering in development hell for a number of years now.
