A sequel to the 2002 indie smash hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is officially in the works and is once again being written by the films star, Nia Vardalos.
The original was a huge sleeper hit and was unexpectedly nominated for an Oscar. It also currently holds the record for the highest-grossing romcom of all time and so some would say that a sequel was inevitable. However given the decade plus that has passed, it seems a strange time to announce the sequel.
Some cynics have suggested that Vardalos’ career hasn’t taken off like she would have liked and so she is going back to the drawing board. Vardalos herself acknowledges these critics though by stating: “Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”
The story of the first film told of a relationship between Vardalos’ character and her marriage to John Corbett’s Ian Miller and this time round it will focus on the next step based on her own experience with motherhood.
Not much news on the production of this one yet, but shooting is expected to start soon.
