Even with Cannes being known for it’s star-studded, prestigious events, it still comes at a surprise that an estimated £34 million worth of Leviev jewellery was stolen yesterday (28th July).

An armed man stole the pieces from the Carlton Hotel in Cannes during a Leviev diamon exhibition held in the lobby. The valuable jewels were due to be on public display until the end of August. The thief is yet to be identified.

“A full and urgent operation is under way to catch the culprit and recover these jewels,” the Cannes police department told the BBC. “Thieves see Cannes as rich pickings.”

Coincidentally, The Carlton Hotel is the location at which Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘To Catch A Thief’ was filmed. The movie is about a jewel thief that steals from residents and tourists of the Riviera. Ooh, maybe that’s where the thieves got their inspiration? Who knows.

This theft could be the second largest heist in France, if the estimated value is confirmed. The reigning champions’ robbery was in 2008 when 3 men stole pieces from a jewellery exhibition in Paris, with a value of around £73 million.

It seems Cannes Film Festival was the perfect distraction, as 2 other thefts took place then. A De Grisogono necklace worth £1.6m simply disappeared from a star-studded hotel party, and Chopard jewels worth £650,000 also disappeared from another hotel the week before! So if you’re in Cannes, and have a menagerie of luxury gems, maybe hire Jason Statham to guard them? Just a thought…
