After four years in the spotlight, The Wanted are taking an indefinite hiatus following their last string of ‘Word Of Mouth‘ tour dates in North America. Although the British-Irish boyband have vowed to work together again in the future, the group have decided to split in order to pursue solo endeavours.
To celebrate what has been an incredible career, HTF has compiled a list of The Wanted’s top 10 moments from over the past few years!
1. Capital FM Summertime Ball 2010
The Wanted have been regular performers at the annual event ever since 2010, taking part in the Ball for four consecutive years. On the first occasion, they were virtually unknown and performed just one song – their debut single ‘All Time Low‘. The performance was arguably a big contributing factor in them achieving a No. 1 chart position upon the track’s release.
2. ‘The Wanted’ album
After two hit singles, The Wanted’s eponymous debut album was released in October 2010. With a mix of musical styles, from soppy love songs such as second single ‘Heart Vacancy‘ and ‘Weakness‘ to the catchy ‘Lose My Mind‘ and the raw Jay McGuiness-led vocals of ‘Hi and Low‘, the album has something for everyone.
3. Performing ‘Lose My Mind‘ on The X Factor
In case you’re not all clued-up on The Wanted, members Max George and Tom Parker both auditioned for The X Factor as 16-year-olds, facing rejection early on in the competition. Therefore, it was an enormous achievement to perform in front of Simon Cowell (plus the millions watching at home) five years later, as part of Britain’s biggest boyband.
4. Wanted Wednesdays
Not limiting ourselves to one-off occasions here, let’s celebrate the fact that The Wanted released a ‘flip’ (Youtube video) and mailer for their fans every Wednesday. Reflecting on the events of the previous week – whether it be gigs, TV appearances or rehearsals – the band always made sure their fans were kept up-to-date on their whereabouts.
5. Glad You Came
The track that took the band global, ‘Glad You Came‘ was The Wanted’s debut release over in the US, achieving a No. 3 chart position across the pond and landing them their second chart-topping single in the UK. With the addition of the cast of hit American TV show Glee covering the song in an episode, the track (and The Wanted themselves) gained huge popularity.
6. Running with the 2012 Olympic torch
When the Olympics came to London in 2012, it was a huge honour for The Wanted to be involved in the torch relay. The band carried the torch through Newton in South Staffordshire on 30th June 2012, and band member Nathan Sykes tweeted shortly after “Just ran with the Olympic torch!! Such an unbelievable experience!”
7. The Wanted Life
For three months, The Wanted had cameras follow their every move as they lived in a luxury LA house. Footage showed the group recording their third album ‘Word Of Mouth‘ and also documented the drama surrounding Nathan’s throat surgery, which caused him to take a temporary hiatus from the band. The eight-part series was broadcast on E! channel and viewing figures peaked at just under a million in the US, proving The Wanted’s status as one of the world’s biggest boybands.
8. Easter Egg Roll at The White House
The Wanted were invited to meet Michelle Obama at The White House. They also performed and read a story called ‘Caps For Sale’ at the annual Easter Egg Roll, hosted by the Obamas. Although they had met the First Lady in 2012, the event was a special occasion for the group, who the President and his wife were particularly keen to have at the event as their daughters are big fans.
9. Capital FM Summertime Ball 2013
Four years on from their debut Summertime Ball performance, a lot had changed. The band were now famous across the globe, had released No.1 singles and albums and toured in almost every part of the world. Most importantly, they were a man down – until this particular appearance. Nathan Sykes made his highly-anticipated comeback to the group during ‘I Found You‘ after being away from the group following his throat surgery.
10. People’s Choice Awards 2013
Taking home a People’s Choice Award was an incredible achievement for the band, who were often pipped to the post by other nominees of various other music awards. The group were clearly humbled to receive the Favourite Breakout Artist award at the 2013 ceremony, a title voted for by the public and their devoted fanbase.
That concludes our Top 10 The Wanted moments. Do you have any band highlights of your own? We’d love to hear them in the comments below!
