Slam Dunk weekend is almost upon us and we’re getting more and more excited, especially about all the renowned as well as up and coming bands we’ll be able to catch. Perth band The Faim will be making their debut appearance, so we had a chat with vocalist Josh Raven on what we can expect.

MOSH: You’re playing Slam Dunk for the first time this year – what are you expecting from your appearance at this year’s festival?

JR: We seriously don’t know what to expect. I’m sure the YouTube live videos of our favourite bands we’ve watched don’t do it justice but it still blew our minds. It was just this massive community of people show a massive amount of support for the music that we also loved growing up. We’re just going to go up there and do what we always do, which is be ourselves. One thing for sure is the stage is going o be a lot bigger than what we’re used to. Quiet bars and clubs to incredible festivals like Slam Dunk is quite the jump, but we couldn’t be more excited.

MOSH: What is your favourite part of playing a festival vs. a gig?

JR: We haven’t played many but one thing we love about festivals is meeting all the other bands /artists. Everyone has a story and a perspective on music and as a community of musicians it’s so important to keep a strong relationship with each other

MOSH: How do you go about switching up your setlist for festivals?

JR: Our music is quite diverse and having the longer set gives us the opportunity to really show off the different energies in our set. Our performance is so theatrical and emotional and the more time on stage, the more time we have to connect with our audience.

MOSH: Do you have any new tracks/ particular songs you are excited about playing live?

JR: We’re currently about to release our new single Midland Line and it’s a song that’s so close to home for us. The connection for us really hits another place when we perform. Being able to share a song so personal with the world is very exciting.

MOSH: This year’s lineup is amazing – who are you most excited to be playing alongside/ hoping to catch?

JR: There’s such a great list of experienced, credible and talented bands and there’s a lot of artists we’re excited to see. One of our favourites would have to be State Champs. We saw them a few years back in Perth and we were blown away. So much passion, and endless musical talent. Great live band and convinced they’re going to blow our minds again.

MOSH: Using only the bands on the lineup this year, can you create you dream tour?

JR: That’s a hard decision because there’s so many incredible bands but if I had to choose, I’d pick a World Tour in every city with Good Charlotte, State Champs, and Goldfinger.

MOSH: What are some of your best tips to surviving a festival?

JR: We haven’t played a huge amount of festivals but one habit that’s worked for us is always having a routine before our show. We all have our own weird versions of warm ups, line checks, stretches and it really helps get you in a good mindset. A clear mind for us helps us connect with the music and just let the performance take over. There’s nothing worse than in the back of your mind having all the little things of the day frustrate you or stressing about if all the equipment is working. Having a consistent routine that works for you takes time, but I think its essential for any show.

MOSH: What exciting things have you got lined up for the rest of the year?

JR: Not only are we touring the UK, Australia and New Zealand. We have the opportunity to perform at a wide range of incredible festivals and shows while we’re in the UK. Just to name a few, Download Fest, Liverpool Sound City, our first international headline show in Glasgow, Scotland, another UK tour with our friends in PVMTS. A lot is coming and there’s still a lot of exciting plans in the works.
