9. Kowloon Walled City – Grievances // Will Haven – Open The Mind To Discomfort

Okay, so although it is incredibly, horribly cheap of me to fit two albums into one entry, hear me out – I much prefer the earlier work of both these artists, but that is my personal penchant for angular, gritty albums that nobody else likes. Both Kowloon Walled City’s Grievances and Will Haven’s Open The Mind To Discomfort are fantastic records, the former a sprawling, winding mass of post-metal tinged with angst and introspection, and the latter a roiling void of deeper blackness, perhaps one of the heaviest albums I’ve heard all year. Although less vital than either band’s previous works, it’s undeniable that both these acts are still in the major leagues, and between them have put out some of the most interesting music this year.
