Last Friday (Oct 16th), whilst a great day for some in marking the end of the working week, was even better for any fans of One Direction. Throughout the week, the lads had been gearing up for the release of their latest track 'Perfect', the third cut to be lifted from upcoming album Made In The A.M, following 'Drag Me Down' and 'Infinity'.
'Perfect', the track in question, is said to take inspiration from Harry Styles' relationship with Taylor Swift. A small snippet of the track's lyrics reads: "And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out/And if you're looking for someone to write your breakup songs about/Baby, I'm perfect". Given that Swift is renowned for penning many a break-up anthem including 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' and 'Back to December', the lyrics leave little to the imagination in indicating her influence.
The band however, are not alone in chanting about previous failed relationships. Some artists have even gone beyond in their tracks to really pour out their emotions. We thought we'd take a look at some of the most public and poignant break-up songs that have come to grace our ears, and comfort us all the same in our relationship blues.
Taylor Swift – ‘Bad Blood’
Sure we’ve seen the end of a romantic relationship, but if we’re talking about relationships that are purely platonic, ‘Bad Blood‘ for sure takes the top prize. Though Swift has never outright confirmed the inspiration for the song, she has confirmed to GQ that it discusses the “the loss of friendship“. There has long been debate that Katy Perry is the target, starting from a touring conflict concerning Taylor’s employees. Taylor may have us guessing, but ‘Bad Blood‘ is too good a tune, making for a suitable compromise.
