Last Friday (Oct 16th), whilst a great day for some in marking the end of the working week, was even better for any fans of One Direction. Throughout the week, the lads had been gearing up for the release of their latest track 'Perfect', the third cut to be lifted from upcoming album Made In The A.M, following 'Drag Me Down' and 'Infinity'.

'Perfect', the track in question, is said to take inspiration from Harry Styles' relationship with Taylor Swift. A small snippet of the track's lyrics reads: "And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out/And if you're looking for someone to write your breakup songs about/Baby, I'm perfect". Given that Swift is renowned for penning many a break-up anthem including 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' and 'Back to December', the lyrics leave little to the imagination in indicating her influence.

The band however, are not alone in chanting about previous failed relationships. Some artists have even gone beyond in their tracks to really pour out their emotions. We thought we'd take a look at some of the most public and poignant break-up songs that have come to grace our ears, and comfort us all the same in our relationship blues.

Katy Perry – ‘Wide Awake’

Whilst several outlets presumed Katy’s break-up anthem ‘Part Of Me‘ as an attack on Russell Brand and on their failed relationship, it was actually following single ‘Wide Awake‘ that delved into their history. Unlike prior hit ‘Part Of Me’, the lyrics aren’t loaded, they’re not scathing. Instead Katy realises her mistake, and though it had consequences, she’s come out stronger, landing on her feet.
