Now in its sixth and final series, American TV programme Glee has become a worldwide favourite, popularising the musical-comedy-drama hybrid. Boasting a talented singing, dancing and acting cast, the show has had its fair share of celebrity guests since it first hit our screens in 2009. So if you thought you recognised a face or two over the years, don’t be surprised if they were already hit-singers before they appeared on Glee!

1. Britney Spears

In 2010, Britney appeared as herself in the second episode of the second series, titled ‘Britney/Brittany’, which paid tribute to her career. While Britney did not perform on any of the tracks herself and only appears briefly as part of an anasethetic-induced fantasy about oral hygiene, Rachel and Brittany are seen reenacting some of her singles, while replicating the outfits Britney wore in her music videos.

2. Idina Menzel

Although you may know the vocal powerhouse for being the voice behind Frozen‘s Elsa, Idina appeared on Glee intermittently from series one to four. Playing the role of Shelby Corcoran, her character was the coach for The Troubletones and Vocal Adrenaline and the biological mother of Rachel. Interestingly, she was first cast because fans likened her voice to that of Lea Michelle (who plays Rachel) and the two perform duets on I Dreamed A Dream and Poker Face.

3. Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin made his Glee debut in series three, playing a Spanish teacher named David Martinez. He appeared only in one episode titled ‘The Spanish Teacher’, which was based around his character. In his role, he performed Sexy And I Know It alongside the New Directions and La Isla Bonita with Santana in a mixture of English and Spanish.

4. Adam Lambert

Appearing as Elliott “Starchild” Gilbert, the Series 8 American Idol runner-up is introduced in the fourth episode of series five. His character sings Marry The Night as part of an audition for Kurt’s band One Three Hill, and certainly makes an impression, even swinging from a chandelier! Elliott performed on numerous tracks including Gloria, I Believe In A Thing Called Love and Roar.

5. Demi Lovato

Demi was cast as character Dani in series five, appearing in a total of four episodes. She works as a waitress at the Spotlight Diner alongside Kurt, Rachel and Santana and ends up as Santana’s love interest, performing a duet of Here Comes The Sun with her. In her role, Demi also performs alongside Adam Lambert and other cast members on The Happening and Hold On.

6. Max George

Having split with his former The Wanted bandmates, Max decided to pursue an acting career in the US. Playing Clint, a leader of Vocal Adrenaline, Max will ultimately be one of the final additions to Glee, having made his debut appearance only last month. He takes the lead on tracks including Dance The Night Away and Rock Lobster.
