Babymetal are one of those bands who everyone has (or should have) heard of. They’re in every magazine, on every website and have even started announcing shows and festival appearances in the UK. But I seem to be in the minority of people who really doesn’t like them. Now usually when I hear a band that I can’t get into I know it’s a personal thing and I understand how it could appeal to other people. I’m not a Muse fan for example but there’s no denying their live sets are phenomenal and I get the attraction. The same can be said for Brand New, I just didn’t get into them growing up so don’t have the same attachment as others. But Babymetal is another story: it just doesn’t make sense in my mind how anyone can genuinely see beyond the bands gimmick and like the music.
If you take out the girls voices then musically it’s tremendous, the beats are heart wrenching and the tracking is insane. But three young Japanese girls spending half of their time dancing around in tutu’s and the other half singing/ shouting just doesn’t scream out good music to me.
The band have been announced for this years UK Sonisphere and whilst i’m sure the spectacle will be worth watching I can’t imagine watching them for half an hour and not wanting to gag the girls and just listen to the instrumentals for the whole set.
Now maybe the true meaning and feeling of Babymetal has been lost in translation. Maybe i’m just a cynical English person whose scared of news things. Maybe it really is just me, because let’s face it enough people are going gaga for these girls.
What do you think? Do you agree or am I barking mad?
