4 Reasons Why Sam Smith Deserves Those 4 Grammys

Sam Smith Took This Year’s Grammys By Storm With Four Wins – Here’s Four Reasons Why He Deserves Them.

There’s usually one artist that reigns over the rest when it comes to the Grammy Awards, last year it was Daft Punk and you’ll definitely remember Adele’s six wins in 2012. This year’s Grammys saw the success of Sam Smith, who took home four awards overall. Not only was the crossover star named Best New Artist, but he also went home with Record of the Year and Song of the Year for ‘Stay With Me‘ whilst also earning the accolade of Best Pop Vocal Album for In The Lonely Hour.

Evidently it’s Sam’s music that has ultimately earned those four awards, but we’ve comprised our own list, looking at just why Sam won this year by a mile – see if you agree!

1. The Lyrics

If you’ve picked up a copy of In the Lonely Hour, there’s one adjective that comes to mind – it’s honest. In his acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Album, the singer couldn’t help but thank the inspiration behind the record: “I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”  The album’s predominant subject is unrequited love, a theme that has resonated in most people’s lives at least once. ‘I’m Not The Only One‘ is the prime example considering its heart-wrenching lyrics: “Denying every tear/I wish this would be over now/But I know that I still need you here.” Looking at the album’s sales figures, you can see just how many people agree.

2. Music Videos

Considering the album’s melancholic themes, it’s only fitting to match the songs to the visuals. The ‘Leave Your Lover‘ music video sees the singer on a day out in London with two friends. However, what made the music video special was its plot twist at the end – Sam looks on as his friend dates someone else. Anyone else feel the need to give him a hug?

Another notable music video of Sam’s is latest clip ‘Lay Me Down‘ which sees Sam married. When he spoke to MTV he had this to say about the video: “A lot of people have said before that I don’t want to be a spokesperson for the gay community, and that’s very false. Hopefully, I showed that when I put out [‘Lay Me Down’]“. It’s impossible not to fall into a smile.

3. Collaborations

Though still relatively new to the music scene considering 2014 was his breakout year, Sam is now one of pop music’s most sought after. He’s got number ones ‘Latch‘ with Disclosure and ‘La La La‘ with Naughty Boy on his CV, the question is who’s next? Who’s to say that collaborations are restricted to the studio though? Of course Sam just had to perform ‘Stay With Me‘ at the Grammys, but Mary. J Blige makes a wonderful accompaniment, check out their soulful performance above!

4. His Humour

When comes to buying an artists music, being likeable is an integral part. Luckily for us, Sam Smith is just that. He’s also quite funny. In this question and answer video, we get to know the man behind the voice. For example, if he wasn’t singing he’d be a florist in Italy – well that’s what he says. Our favourite moment is his answer to his least favourite subject at school. In his French exam at school, Sam didn’t exactly abide by the rules: “I just put j’adore…and listed every single word I knew in French”.

In our opinion we can’t think of a better artist to have succeeded at this year’s Grammys. We’re sure it won’t be Sam’s last appearance either, here’s to 2016!
