It has been revealed that the 12th and final season of US sitcom Two and a Half Men will feature a gay adoption (and possibly marriage) storyline between lead characters Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer.
CBS chairman Nine Tassler revealed the plot in a press conference at the Television Critics Association press conference on Thursday. Walden, played by Kutcher, will suffer an “existential crisis” following a health scare. He decides to adopt a child to provide his life with meaning, so he asks Alan (Jon Cryer) to be his partner in the adopting process.
Tassler says, “He starts the process and realizes it’s very difficult to adopt a child as a single straight man. So, once and for all, he decides he’s going to propose to Alan—they’re going to adopt a child as a ‘gay’ couple.”
When asked whether she felt the storyline would create an issue with the LGBT community, Tassler says it is a “positive statement” as we live “in a universe where at one point you couldn’t do that and now you can.”
