Ranked #1 in IMDb’s Top 250 movies list, The Shawshank Redemption is yet another King movie that makes it into the list of all-time movie greats. Based on a short novella called Rita Hayworth and the Shawhsank Redemption, this 1994 movie is another prison drama which holds a message of integrity and hope.
The story follows friends Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman), two inmates in Shawshank State prison who are both serving charges for murder. “Red” admits to his guilt, but can see that Andy is innocent and has been wrongly sentenced to serve his life in prison. Despite depressing conditions and horrific treatment from other inmates and guards, Andy seems to maintain hope during his stay in prison.
Directed by Frank Darabont (who also directed The Green Mile), the movie was nominated for 7 Academy Awards amongst many other awards and is cited as being one of Stephen King’s personal favourites.
