5. Carrie
Carrie, released in 1976, was the first ever adaptation of a Stephen King novel. The story follows Carrie White, a girl with telekinetic powers who is subjected to bullying in school and an abusive life at home. A cruel prank played on Carrie in her high school prom becomes an horrific tragedy for the town when her rage takes control.
The movie starred Sissy Spacek as the title role (who received an Academy Award nomination for her performance) and also introduced a young John Travolta, who made his movie debut in Carrie as bully Billy Nolan. Directed by Brian De Palma, the movie has become a horror classic and is still popular despite its datedness. A new version was released in 2013 but received little recognition.
