Finally, for the first time, UK ska pioneers The Specials will share the stage with reggae royalty, Toots and the Maytals. Yes, you read this right!
With both acts boasting significant careers that span over 40 years, they’ll play three very special shows in Leeds, Birmingham, and Hatfield at the end of May to kick-start the summer. With a refreshing mix of timeless anthems between them such as ‘Too Much Too Young,’ ‘Ghost Town,’ ‘Sweet And Dandy’ and‘54-46 (That’s My Number)’. It’s somewhat astounding to believe these two have never performed alongside each other. It’s not only worth the wait, but also a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Being born out of an era of social unrest and mass unemployment, it seems only fitting that The Specials can burst onto the stage once more in these darker days. Since reforming in 2008, they have become undisputed party-starters, with one of the most in-demand live shows of recent times.
Toots and the Maytals rose out of Jamaica with their untouchable take on classic Reggae, introducing the beloved genre to the world. Frontman Toots Hibbert’s soulful vocal style marked him out as one of the greatest voices in the genre’s history. Back on stage after three years away, expect to be transported to the sun-kissed beaches of Jamaica!
With The Specials covering Toots’ “Pressure Drop” and “Monkey Man”, this will be a marriage of the beloved genres of ska and reggae, coming together to deliver what will promise to be one of the most feel-good gigs of the summer.
Terry Hall of The Specials’ says; “In all this time, we have never been fortunate enough to play on the same stage as Toots & The Maytals. What a great bill – I’m definitely there!!”
