Self-professed Essex lad and X Factor alumni Olly Murs has a habit of coming off as trying a little hard to stay “cool” at the same time as radio-friendly; this time tagging onto the tails of swiftly rising hip-hip double team Rizzle Kicks for a laid back first single from his as-of-yet untitled second album.
Undeterred by the implicit fast forward applied to X Factor finalists’ careers, Murs has managed to craft something substantial from his “cheeky lad” persona and his first album, relatively speaking, did the business well enough to save him the chop.
‘Heart Skips A Beat’ is sample heavy and ska influenced, and considering Murs’ vocal talent wouldn’t sound too out of place on a Specials/Selecter record, and that Rizzle Kicks’ contribution is a hip-hop middle 8 that even your mum could get on board with, there’s no reason that they’re not onto a winner.
There’s no genre redefining moments within the three and half minutes, but it’s an inoffensive, upbeat crossover that’s hard not to imagine getting some big radio play, and as Olly Murs finds a bit more of his own style, he’s getting better and better.
