Boy George has ignored criticism from fans about his poorly received performance on Strictly Come Dancing on Sunday evening’s results show.
The singer appeared on the dancing show with his group Culture Club and they performed one of their hit singles from the early 1980s, ‘Karma Chameleon’.
During their performance, Twitter exploded with fans reactions concerning the quality of George’s vocals, or lack of.
As the performance progressed, it became clear that George could not replicate the care free and fluid vocals from back in the 80’s and was noticeably deeper. Parts of the performance were slightly cringeworthy as he was unable to sustain certain notes, while his voice failed to produce any sound on occasion too. All in all, it sounded as though he was struggling to sing the song as it is on the original studio recording.
George took to Twitter to dispel any notion of him failing to perform the song in it’s original style, saying “I don’t ever see hateful comments. I have my sunshine button turned right up! And I’m eating strawberries in New York! If you love me. Great. If you don’t. Crows feet! :).”
While his vocal performance wasn’t perfect, we don’t think it was a complete car crash, either. It is likely that George is aware of his current vocal condition and sang the song to best suit his voice as it is now. We applaud him for performing live and not lip syncing or singing along to a pre-recorded recent version which could have been glossed over. While he is receiving criticism for the performance, we believe that he did the right thing by using a live vocal on the night, as it would have no doubt attracted more controversy if he had of been accused of lip syncing.

Boy George somewhat underwhelming on Strictly. Ooh have to look after a voice. It’s a delicate wee instrument.
