Global music icon Mariah Carey has unveiled the artwork and title for her latest compilation album: a re-issue of her previous number-ones album, but instead of 13 chart toppers, this new one has a staggering 18. While the cover shows Mimi in all of what we have come to identify her with (plunging neckline, short dress and skyscraper heels), the title is slightly more ambiguous.
On discovering the name, #1 to Infinity, I wasn’t sure if it was a nod to her holding the record for most solo number-ones (18), or if she was channeling Buzz Lightyear with his iconic phrase “To infinity, and beyond!” Either way, the chart feat is still something that no other artist has managed to surpass, and it certainly doesn’t look like anyone will be overtaking her any time soon. If anything, Carey is more likely to beat The Beatles record of 20.
The sky is the limit with Carey, and that is possibly what she is referring to. She has sold more records than any other female, more number-ones, holds the record for longest running number-one, and has the widest vocal range that the music industry has ever seen. So while the title may sound a bit clunky, it truly does represent her, her career, and her voice.
