WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FANTASY ALBUMS WHERE MUSIC FANS ARE PUT TO THE TEST TO DECIPHER THEIR ULTIMATE COLLECTION.
The rules are simple(ish): they can’t repeat an artist, and to just make it that little bit more interesting they have to use the same track number from another album. For example, Track 1 could be the opening track of the incredible Stone Roses’ debut ‘I Wanna Be Adored’. Track 2 could be Blur’s ‘Song 2′ – you get the idea.
This month’s fantasy album has been curated by stand up comedian, writer and podcaster Kiri Pritchard-Mclean.
Kiri has found success as a writer for the critically acclaimed sketch group Gein’s Family Giftshop and as a solo performer and has two Edinburgh shows under her belt. When she isn’t performing to audiences around the country, Kiri works alongside fellow comedian Rachel Fairburn hosting the fantastic comedy/serial killer podcast All Killa No Filla .
Here is Kiri’s fantasy album:
TRACK ONE : ‘SUNDAY MORNING’ – THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
“I love this twinkly little song, it’s a very lovely and polite song to pop on first thing in the morning that sort of eases you into an album. I don’t want my first track to be an assault on the senses – that’s track three’s job. I’m designing this album like I’ve started playing it on an actual Sunday morning so that’s the vibe.”
TRACK TWO: ‘THE FOX, THE CROW AND THE COOKIE’ – MEWITHOUTYOU
“I love a song that’s a story and this is a super charming one. I’m after a relaxing morning, but upbeat and this builds so brilliantly so I can have a nice Sunday morning and build up to a racket.”
TRACK THREE: ‘HEART IN A CAGE’ – THE STROKES
“Right, here’s the racket, we’ve had plenty of time to wake up. Time for this absolute mission statement of a song. It is such a banger and Nik Valensi’s guitar work in this is so spectacular. Julian’s (Casablancas) vocals are at their best and for once they’re not drowned in distortion so you can actually hear the lyrics – some of their best I would argue. Once I listen to this, I’m ready for anything.”
TRACK FOUR: ‘FOLDING CHAIR’ – REGINA SPEKTOR
“Thanks to the Strokes the cobwebs have well and truly been blown out. So, it’s time to engage with a gorgeous story from one of my my favourites, Regina Spektor. I love this song, it’s a little love song about a wee family – at least that’s what I decipher from the nonsense? Since meeting my fella I’m hopelessly romantic and this song gives me a floaty and safe feeling that I get from his love, so I reckon this is a nice bit of respite before I unleash more lads banging away at drums and stuff.”
TRACK FIVE: ‘SPRING/SUN/WINTER/DREAD’ – EVERYTHING EVERYTHING
“I love these dudes, I thought I’d gone off music altogether but then a dear pal played these chaps and i just LOVED this album and it finally felt like someone had made some music for me. This builds into a really jaunty track so I’m very happy for it to bring us into track six.”
TRACK SIX: ‘WHAT’S THIS ( NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS)’ – DANNY ELFMAN
“I know, curveball. But, I love Christmas, I love musicals, I love Halloween, I love Danny Elfman and this song is an absolute tune. It’s full or curiosity and the love of learning and I love that feeling – when you get excited by knowledge, schools can knock that stuff out of you but it’s important to keep it. Especially on a Sunday.”
TRACK SEVEN: ‘SPIRAL STAIRCASE’ – KINGS OF LEON
“Never has a band jumped the shark so hard but I will always have a special place in my heart for this first album, I’d never heard anything like it and haven’t since. Things are obviously getting going now – WHAT A SUNDAY!”
TRACK EIGHT: ‘I WANT TO KISS YOU’ – THE SPOOK SCHOOL
“Now, this is upbeat as shit and gloriously saccharine but, it’s on the slide towards sentiment which is how I want this album to go. It reminds me of my boyfriend so it instantly makes me smile and feel really warm and hopeful about the future.”
TRACK NINE: ‘AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING’ – THE BEATLES*
*Due to copy write you cant find The Beatles version anywhere so here is the a cover by Regina Spektor
“Obviously the best Beatles album. This song is so cheery and I love the harmonies. I know the Beatles is a cheesy choice but I love this so much I don’t care what people think.”
TRACK TEN: ‘BORN NAKED’ – RU PAUL
“WHAT AN ANTHEM. I can’t wait to face a carvery with this rattling around my head. Also, it’s so true.”
Thank you Kiri for a great selection and Ru Paul is now on my own personal playlist. If you would like to find out more about Kiri check out her website here
