A stash of wealth soaked jewellery taken from a locked safe of a prestigious hotel – a secret heist conducted while the affluent and famous are oblivious to the crime – sounds like the plot of a Cannes Film Festival entry, never mind real life!
An estimated €1 million (£650,000) of Chopard jewellery was stolen from the Novotel Hotel in Cannes, merely hours before the film festival’s opening ceremony was due to kick off. With all the media hype surrounding the festival and photographers and police alike on alert, it’s a daring feat for any thieves to attempt.
A spokesperson described the crime as “a well planned robbery” that took place in the early hours of Friday morning while the Chopard gala taking place across town was running late.
The lucrative Swiss brand is the official sponsor for the festival and is due to loan items to stars such as Cara Delevinge, Cindy Crawford and Lana Del Rey for their appearances at the splash-out event.
If the jewellery stolen was meant to be worn by stars on the red carpet, Chopard are keeping worryingly calm. International Communications Director for Chopard, Raffaella Rossiello confirmed the stolen items were not meant for the festival; “The jewellery stolen is not part of the collection of the jewels that are worn by actresses during the Cannes Film Festival,” she said.
